A work of passion & patience…
It is believed that chain mail was invented by the Celts. Chain mail history dates back to antiquity and was adopted by the Romans after they realised its protective potential. A variety of materials were used to make chain mail including brass and iron. The name “chain mail” is an English combination of two words. “Chain, meaning a series of metal rings or links fitted into one another and “Mail” from the French “Maille”, which is derived from the Latin “Macula”, meaning “mesh of a net”.
Chain mail was the earliest form of metal armour worn by the average soldier during the Medieval times. Medieval chain mail was a flexible armour which was made by interlocking metal rings, although the earliest form of chain mail consisted of iron rings sewn to fabric or leather. It was later improved by interlacing rings independent of fabric, closing each ring firmly by welding or riveting.
Chain mail patterns were used to create parts of armour to suit various parts of the body. Sizing was easily accommodated by the addition of extra rings. The most common form of chain mail patterns during medieval times was the “European 4 in 1”.
Chosen for its fabric-like qualities and beautiful fluidity, the European 4 in 1 pattern is at the core of many of NAIIAD’s jewellery designs…
Only the best quality silver rings are used to make NAIIAD’s jewellery. Each ring is saw cut by hand with a very thin blade for a precision cut. The rings are then tumble polished and deburred for a perfect finish. This allows for each ring to be closed as seamlessly as possible when assembled.
Quality is of paramount importance to me, and it is reflected in both the materials used and craftsmanship of each piece of jewellery I design and make by hand with patience and care…
